Fortunately for the Clemson faithful, the near-impossible has seemingly happened.
Kyle Parker is returning for another go as the Tigers’ starting quarterback.
After negotiations with the Colorado Rockies failed to produce a deal to the Parker camp’s liking by their “artificial” deadline of midnight ET Tuesday, Parker has informed head coach Dabo Swinney of his decision between returning to Clemson for another season of football or becoming a baseball-only athlete. The school’s not yet releasing what Parker’s decision is, but multiple online reports -- including a tweet from former teammate C.J. Spiller -- indicate that Parker told Swinney he will play football for the Tigers this fall.
Parker will publicly announce his decision in a statement at some point Wednesday.
While the talks on a baseball-only contract with the Rockies fell through, negotiations between the two sides are expected to continue. College players selected in the June MLB draft have until August 15 to sign a contract with the drafting club, or they return to next year’s draft pool.
In the end, though, all that matters to Swinney & Company is the fact that they’ll have the Freshman All-American for another season. At least.
