UNC suspends Marvin Austin indefinitely; DT won’t play in opener

A shoe has finally dropped in the situation swirling around Marvin Austin, although it’s not exactly the shoe most had expected.

According to a press release issued by North Carolina, the defensive tackle has been suspended indefinitely. However, the school states -- apparently with a straight face and everything -- that the suspension is unrelated to the NCAA investigation that has cast a pall over the school for the past two months or so.

Here, we’ll let head coach Butch Davis explain.

“This decision is not a result of the ongoing NCAA review,” Davis said in a statement. “Marvin has violated team rules and has neglected his responsibilities to the team.”

The release concluded with the note that Austin will not play in the opener Saturday against LSU.

The senior has been at the center of a NCAA probe stemming from his alleged relationship with an agent and several trips he took in the offseason. It’s also believed he’s part of a new prong to the NCAA’s investigation involving academics.
