Virginia Tech served up some scheduling news to help fill the early days of our college football offseason today. Among some scheduling changes to previously scheduled games, the Hokies announced a scheduling agreement with Rutgers for a home-and-home series to begin in 2023. The two former Big East foes will play one game in New Jersey and another in Blacksburg, Virginia, which should be a nice addition to the Big Ten and ACC non-conference schedules down the line.
Rutgers will host Virginia Tech on September 16, 2023. Virgina Tech will host the Scarlet Knights the following season on September 21, 2024.
The announcement of the Virginia Tech-Rutgers series was one of many scheduling announcements made today by the Hokies. A previously announced game in 2019 against Notre Dame left Virginia Tech with just five games, which led to some shuffling of future contests with scheduling partners at Penn State and Wisconsin.
Virginia Tech moved a 2022 home game against Penn State up to September 12, 2020 and Penn State agreed to move back a home game against the Hokies in 2023 to September 6, 2025. Virginia Tech’s 2019 game at Wisconsin has been rescheduled for September 14, 2024. A home game against the Badgers previously scheduled for 2020 will now be played on September 13, 2025. The games between Wisconsin and Virginia Tech were originally scheduled to be played in 2016 and 2017, but Wisconsin needed to push those games back to make room for games against LSU. College football scheduling can be a headache at times.
As things stand now for the Hokies, Virginia Tech has fulfilled the ACC’s non-conference scheduling requirement of including one opponent from another power conference through the 2025 season. The Big Ten has no such non-conference scheduling requirement at this time.
