Steelers promoted WR DeMarcus Ayers from their practice squad.

They cut backup K Randy Bullock to make room. A seventh-round rookie out of Houston, Ayers runs a 4.72 forty but was an explosive return man in college.

Steelers WR DeMarcus Ayers underwent core-muscle surgery on Tuesday.

It’s also known as sports-hernia surgery. Ayers was a seventh-round pick out of Houston last year and was promoted from the practice squad in December. He’s looking at a recovery of about two months.

Steelers signed No. 229 overall pick WR DeMarcus Ayers to a four-year contract.

Ayers was prolific for the University of Houston, but is undersized (5-foot-9, 182 pounds), and had a disappointing Combine (4.72 speed). If Ayers can crack the 53-man roster, it will be as a reserve slot man who potentially contributes on returns.

Steelers selected Houston WR DeMarcus Ayers with the No. 229 overall pick in the 2016 draft.

Ayers (5'9/182) was an undersized-if-prolific playmaker for the Cougars, parlaying 142 career catches into 1,687 yards (11.9 YPR) and nine touchdowns, also scoring once on a punt return and once on a kickoff. Ayers proceeded to disappoint at the Combine, running a painfully slow 4.72 forty with a 33-inch vertical. Ayers does have terrific hands, securing 99-of-101 catchable targets in 2015 according to College Football Focus. Ayers will try to make it as a situational slot receiver with punt return value.
