Cook

Cook wasn’t getting enough done on special teams, and he was never going to be an asset on defense. Wilson, who was not picked in this summer’s supplemental draft, has some upside as a free safety prospect.

A special teamer, Cook had recorded eight tackles for the Jets over the past two seasons. He’ll fill the same role in Baltimore.

He suffered the injury in Thursday night’s preseason tilt with the Jaguars. Cook is a special teams type who was on the roster bubble to open training camp.

The fifth-year undrafted free agent missed all of 2012 with a broken leg. Cook has appeared in 17 career games, and will look to latch on elsewhere as a special teamer.

Cook drew comparisons to Bob Sanders in college and plays with a similar heat-seeking style at strong safety, but lacks Sanders’ range and needed another season in college. He left the Gamecocks after his true junior year.

Cook apparently got a nice year-early jump on the “Senior Slide,” being declared academically ineligible for Thursday’s Outback Bowl. Cook will be a strong safety and special teamer if he makes it in the pros. He led SC in tackles with 87 in 2008, but recorded no pass deflections or interceptions.

Cook went through training camp and preseason with the Jets before signing with the UFL’s Hartford Colonials this season. He’ll add depth with Jim Leonhard and James Ihedigbo sidelined.

Cook had an interception in the preseason finale, but it wasn’t enough to save his job. Tevasu, nicknamed “MTV,” is expected to end up on the Jets’ practice squad.

He appeared to injure his knee when he slipped trying to make the tackle. The Jets are extremely thin at the safety position, with former UFL S Emanuel Cook as the only healthy player behind Brodney Pool and Eric Smith.

Cook signed with the Jets after going undrafted out of South Carolina in 2009, but he spent much of last season on the Bucs’ practice squad. Butler was an undrafted rookie out of Nevada.
