NASCAR’s Sprint Cup and Camping World Truck Series hit the Martinsville Speedway short track this past weekend. Saturday afternoon, the trucks competed in the Texas Roadhouse 200 at the 0.526-mile oval in Virginia. On Sunday, for the first of the three-race Chase Round of 8, the Cup drivers were active in the Goody’s Fast Relief 500. XFINITY Series racing will return next weekend with the O’Reilly Auto Parts Challenge at Texas Motor Speedway.
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS)
Time Trials: Martin Truex Jr. (No. 78 Auto-Owners Insurance Toyota Camry) won the Coors Light Pole Award for the Goody’s Fast Relief 500 (98.206 mph). This is his 12th pole in 402 NSCS races. It is his fifth pole and 24th top-10 start in 2016 and his first pole in 22 races at Martinsville Speedway. Joey Logano (starts second) posted his 24th top-10 start of 2016 and his 11th in 16 races at Martinsville. Jimmie Johnson (third) posted his 19th top-10 start at Martinsville and his 16th in 33 races this season. Chase Elliott (fifth) was the fastest qualifying rookie.
Did Not Qualify: No one. Only 40 entries for the 40 car field.
Results: Jimmie Johnson (No. 48 Lowe’s Chevrolet SS) won the Goody’s Fast Relief 500, his 79th victory in 540 NSCS races. This is his fourth victory and 15th top-10 finish in 2016. It is his ninth victory and 24th top-10 finish in 30 races at Martinsville. Brad Keselowski (finished second) posted his eighth top-10 finish in 14 races at Martinsville and his 22nd top-10 finish in 2016. Denny Hamlin (third) posted his 17th top-10 finish in 22 races at Martinsville. Chase Elliott (12th) was the highest finishing rookie. Pole-sitter Martin Truex Jr. led 147 laps and finished the 500-lap race in seventh place. Jimmie Johnson leads the point standings by 5 points over Denny Hamlin.

Time Trials: Sprint Cup regular Chase Elliott (No. 24 Chevrolet SS), driving the Carlos Contreras owned No. 71 NAPA Auto Parts/Valvoline Chevrolet Silverado, won the Keystone Light 21 Means 21 Pole Award for the Texas Roadhouse 200 (96.254 mph). This is his second pole in ten NCWTS races. It is his first pole and first top-10 start in 2016 and his first pole in three NCWTS races at Martinsville. XFINITY Series regular Daniel Suarez (starts second) posted his eighth top-10 NCWTS start of 2016 and his third in four truck races at Martinsville. Cole Custer (third), the fastest qualifying Rookie of the Year contender, posted his fifth top-10 start at Martinsville and his 10th in 20 races this season.

Results: Johnny Sauter (No. 21 Smokey Mountain Herbal Snuff Chevrolet Silverado) won the Texas Roadhouse 200, his 12th victory in 195 NCWTS races. This is his second victory and 16th top-10 finish in 2016 and his third victory and ninth top-10 finish in 18 races at Martinsville. Pole-sitter Chase Elliott (led a race-high 109 laps and finished second) posted his second top-10 finish in three NCWTS races at Martinsville. John Hunter Nemechek (third) posted his third top-10 finish in seven races at Martinsville. Cole Custer (seventh) was the highest finishing rookie. Sauter leads the 2016 NCWTS point standings by 7 points over Christopher Bell (finished fourth).
