Week of February 28 - March 6
Great Options
Frederik Andersen - Carolina Hurricanes: Andersen earned a 19-save shutout in his last game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on February 25th and thus, he continues to be a very reliable choice in net. The matchups he was in this past week were not necessarily the toughest, as he played the Philadelphia Flyers and Columbus. He did, however, earn wins and post impressive individual numbers in both of those games. Against the Flyers on February 21st, Andersen made 38 saves on 41 shots. He is on a three-game win streak heading into next week. The Hurricanes will play the Detroit Red Wings, Washington Capitals, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Seattle Kraken. Andersen currently has a record of 28-7-2, along with a save percentage of .929 and a GAA of 2.06.
Jacob Markstrom - Calgary Flames: Markstrom’s impressive seven-game win streak was finally snapped on February 24th against the Vancouver Canucks. During that game he allowed three goals on 21 shots to post a save percentage of .857. This was Markstrom’s first mediocre performance in quite a bit. It should, for now, be considered as an outlier considering how dominant the 32-year-old has been all February. Thus, Markstrom remains a must-start in net. He has a record of 23-11-5. Through 40 appearances Markstrom has accumulated a save percentage of .926 and a GAA of 2.11. This upcoming week the Calgary Flames will play the Minnesota Wild, Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche.
Scott Wedgewood - Arizona Coyotes: Wedgewood’s play as of late has been pleasantly surprising. He had an incredibly impressive showing in his last game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday. During that contest Wedgewood made a whopping 43 saves on 44 shots to post a save percentage of .977 and help his team complete an upset win. Wedgewood has three wins in his last four appearances, and those wins come against opponents like the Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars and Vegas. Additionally, he has not posted a save percentage below .900 in his past five appearances. This could be the perfect time to consider Wedgewood as an option in a daily fantasy scenario. He has a record of 7-12-3, along with a save percentage of .908 and a GAA of 3.02. This next week the Arizona Coyotes will play the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday and the Ottawa Senators on Saturday.
Good Options
Sam Montembeault - Montreal Canadiens: Montembeault is currently riding a three-game win streak. He earned himself a 32-save shutout against the Buffalo Sabres on February 23rd. Montembeault also had a particularly impressive showing against the Toronto Maple Leafs on February 21st, during which he made 35 saves on 37 shots. Montembeault sits as a good option because it is unclear how long he can keep this momentum going. He is, however, definitely worth considering at the moment. This next week the Canadiens will face off against Calgary Flames on Thursday and the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. Through 18 starts, Montembeault has collected a record of 5-10-4. He has a save percentage of .902 and a GAA of 3.53.
Jonathan Quick - Los Angeles Kings: Quick has been collecting wins this past week, but his individual performances in those games have been inconsistent. He is on a three-game win streak at the moment, yet he has only posted a save percentage above .900 once in his past four appearances. It will be interesting to see if his team can continue to bail him out on nights that he underperforms. Quick has a record of 14-10-6. Through 30 appearances he has accumulated a save percentage of .913 and a GAA of 2.55. The Los Angeles Kings will play the Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Buffalo Sabres this next week.
Connor Hellebuyck - Winnipeg Jets: Hellebuyck has been posting good numbers between the pipes as of late. The only reason he falls to the good column is because even despite his individual statistics, he is struggling to get into the win column. This indicates a larger issue within the Jets team that could have a negative impact on Hellebuyck’s performances going forward. He has just one win in his past six games. However, during that time he has only failed to crack a .900 save percentage once. The 28-year-old had a particularly tough showing against the Colorado Avalanche on February 25th, during which he allowed six goals on 42 shots. Hellebuyck has a record of 17-19-8, along with a save percentage of .912 and a GAA of 2.88. This upcoming week the Jets will play the Montreal Canadiens, Dallas Stars and New York Rangers.
Bad Options
Mike Smith - Edmonton Oilers: Smith had two very concerning showings this past week. He had a particularly tough outing against the Minnesota Wild on February 20th, during which he allowed four goals on just seven shots before being replaced just over 13 minutes into the game. Then on February 23rd against the Tampa Bay Lightning, Smith allowed four goals on 22 shots to end his night with a save percentage of .818. It is evident that right now Smith is definitely an option to avoid in any fantasy situation. He has a record of 5-6-1, along with a save percentage of .891 and a GAA of 3.65. This week the Oilers will play the Philadelphia Flyers, Chicago Blackhawks and Montreal Canadiens.
John Gibson - Anaheim Ducks: Gibson is in a heavy slump at the moment. He has consistently posted save percentages below .900 in his past five outings. Back on February 17th, he allowed seven goals on 41 shots in a game against the Edmonton Oilers. Gibson also has just one win in his past five outings. Until he finds his momentum back, he is most definitely an option to avoid. His long-term value will be heavily impacted by his ability to bounce back from this regression. Gibson has a record of 16-14-8. Through 38 appearances he has collected a save percentage of .911 and a GAA of 2.84. This upcoming week the Anaheim Ducks will play the Boston Bruins, Vegas Golden Knights and San Jose Sharks.
