Erik Karlsson got off to something of a slow start with San Jose, at least by the extremely high standards he’s held to, but that’s well behind him now. He scored a goal and registered three assists on Saturday to extend his point streak to nine games, albeit with a two-game interruption due to a suspension.
He had seven assists in his first 18 games, but now has three goals and 23 points in his last 20 contests. That’s pushed him into eighth place in the defensemen scoring race and at this point he should continue to climb up that list.
His efforts also helped the Sharks earn a 7-4 win against Edmonton and improve to 21-12-7 this season. Like Karlsson, San Jose was underwhelming at the start of the season, but they’re starting to look like the major contenders everyone expected them to be after they acquired the star defenseman. Meanwhile, Edmonton has dropped five straight games and is losing serious ground in the Wild Card race. Connor McDavid is doing everything he can for the Oilers, but thus far Edmonton has failed to build around the elite player.
