Jets agreed to terms with FB Fui Vakapuna on a one-year contract.
A final cut by the Bengals the past two Septembers, Vakapuna is a roster long-shot with John Conner and Josh Baker higher on the depth chart.
  • FA Running Back #22
Jets waived FB Fui Vakapuna and signed CB Devon Torrence.
Torrence is a UDFA out of Ohio State. Vakapuna was competing for a roster spot behind John “Terminator” Conner. He never had real chance to last.
  • FA Running Back #22
Bengals signed seventh-round FB Fui Vakapuna to a four-year, $1.811 million contract.
Already 25 after serving a two-year Mormon mission, Vakapuna was mostly a lead blocker at BYU. At 5'11/244, he has the build to play fullback at this level if he improves his technique, but we’re guessing he won’t make the club.
  • CIN Running Back
The Bengals have re-promoted Jeremi Johnson to the starting fullback spot, ahead of rookie Fui Vakapuna.
This is potentially good news for Cedric Benson. Johnson, 29, was one of the league’s fiercest lead blockers between 2004-2006, before weight issues knocked him out of the NFL last year. Vakapuna began camp as the starter.
  • FA Running Back #22
    Bengals released FB Fui Vakapuna.
Vakapuna just wasn’t a physical enough blocker to make the squad. Since Brian Leonard was kept, he could fill in at fullback if the Bengals need.
  • FA Running Back #22
Bengals signed FB Fui Vakapuna from the Cardinals’ practice squad.
Vakapuna, a seventh-round pick by the Bengals, began training camp as the starting fullback but struggled in preseason action. He’ll provide insurance for Jeremi Johnson, who sprained his knee against the Bears in Week 7.
  • FA Running Back #22
Fui Vakapuna is the favorite to be the Bengals’ starting fullback.
With Jeremi Johnson apparently done, Vakapuna has a major opportunity to lock down the gig in camp. The “Hard Knocks” star from last season will be pushed by undrafted free agent Joe Tronzo and possibly tight end Dan Coats.
  • FA Running Back #22
The Bengals have ruled out Fui Vakapuna (shoulder), Antonio Bryant (knee), Andre Smith (foot), Tom Nelson (knee) and Rashad Jeanty (leg) for Sunday’s preseason opener against the Cowboys.
We already know about Bryant’s troubles and Smith is just hoping to be ready for Week 1. Vakapuna is being counted on to serve as Cedric Benson’s lead blocker. The extent of his inury is unknown.
  • FA Running Back #22
    Bengals waived/injured FB Fui Vakapuna.
Vakapuna was expected to be Cedric Benson’s lead blocker this season before coming down with a shoulder injury in training camp. The Bengals will scan the waiver wire for a fullback.
  • FA Running Back #22
    Bengals waived FB Fui Vakapuna.
This is the second straight season Vakapuna has been amongst the Bengals’ final cuts. Now 27 without an NFL appearance to his name, Vakapuna is probably about out of time in the league.
