NFL suspended Raiders DT Gerald McCoy six games for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.
McCoy suffered a season-ending knee injury in Week 1 and will be a free agent at the end of the year. He can serve his suspension while on injured reserve. McCoy hasn’t played a full game since 2019 due to a ruptured quad muscle that cost him the entirety of his 2020 season. At 34 years old once he’s able to sign with a new team, the market for his services will be slim at best.

Raiders DT Gerald McCoy suffered a season-ending knee injury against the Ravens.
McCoy was signed to a one-year deal with the Raiders. When he hits free agency in 2022, he will be 34 years old with his last full game coming back in 2019. After missing all of 2020 with a ruptured quad and all of 2021 with a knee injury, McCoy may struggle to draw interest. That said, McCoy played well in 2019 and could have an impact in 2022 if his rehab goes well.

Raiders signed DT Gerald McCoy to a one-year, $2 million contract.
McCoy, 33, sat out all of last season after suffering a torn quad in Cowboys camp. After spending the first nine years of his career with the Bucs where he made six Pro Bowls and one All-Pro squad, McCoy was with the Panthers in 2019 the last time we saw him in a game. He registered five sacks for Carolina that year. McCoy is no longer the every-down interior havoc-causer he once was, but there could be some snaps left in him. He’ll compete for playing time at the three-technique spot.

Free agent DT Gerald McCoy is visiting the Raiders.
McCoy, now 33, missed all of last season with a ruptured quad. Once a truly elite interior disrupter, McCoy’s career is hanging on by a thread. He recorded five sacks for the Panthers in 2019 before signing with the Cowboys last offseason only to get hurt.

Free agent DT Gerald McCoy said he would be open to returning to the Bucs.
“I would love to go to Tampa,” McCoy said. “I’m in the winning phase. Not looking for a huge contract, I’m looking for the best situation where I can experience winning before I’m done. So for my free agent pick, or whoever picks me, the goal is for it to be mutual they are in a win-now situation.” McCoy had his 2020 contract voided with the Cowboys after a season-ending quad injury. He’s healthy at seven months removed from surgery but could struggle for guaranteed money coming off a lost season. With Ndamukong Suh a free agent, the Bucs may have a spot for 33-year-old McCoy.

Cowboys released DT Gerald McCoy with an injury waiver.
McCoy had a clause in his contract that allowed the Cowboys to release him if he suffered a quad injury. McCoy’s “three-year, $18 million” deal supposedly included $9 million guaranteed, but McCoy will end up walking away with just his $3 million signing bonus. No one will be crying for him, but it goes to show how much power NFL teams still have when it comes to contracts. Set to miss his entire age-32 campaign, McCoy will likely be limited to incentive-laden offers in 2021.

Cowboys DT Gerald McCoy (ruptured quad) will undergo season-ending surgery.
Signed to a three-year, $18 million contract this offseason, 32-year-old McCoy was expected to head Dallas’ overhaul in the trenches following the losses of Robert Quinn and Maliek Collins in free agency. Those duties will now fall to NT Dontari Poe and a host of rotational types, additionally fortifying DL Tyrone Crawford as a roster lock out of necessity. McCoy’s absence is a huge blow after the veteran hadn’t lost a step on tape during his final year with the Panthers.
