BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The parents of a nine-year-old girl killed when a drunk man rammed his rental car into a golf cart has agreed to settle three wrongful death lawsuits.
Pierre and Ana Maria Wilson have reached settlements totaling $3.2 million dollars with Martin Shane Alexander, his furniture company and the Hertz Corporation. It’s over the death of their daughter Vanessa in February of 2003.
Alexander was convicted last October of drunk driving, but cleared on a more serious charge of D-U-I manslaughter. He was sentenced to nine months in jail, but released shortly after the verdict and returned to Canada.
Vanessa Wilson died when Alexander drove his rented Mustang into the golf cart she and her mother were riding in at the Bonaventure Country Club in Weston. He had been drinking at the country club before driving off, and a breathalyzer test showed he had a blood-alcohol level of about three times the legal limit.
The Wilsons still have a wrongful death suit pending against the country club.
