The window is closing on Peter Hanson to win a major – because the Swede intends to shut it on himself in 2016.
The 54-hole leader of the Masters plans to retire in four years at age 38, after competing for his native country in the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
Before hanging up his soft spikes, Hanson has another goal on his golf bucket list – win a Masters.
“I’ve never been good at setting long-term goals, but I ‘ll probably stick to the green jacket for now,” Hanson said, according to Golfweek. “But the Olympics would be a dream to play in for my country and to play the first golf Olympics would be fantastic.”
The odds of a Masters win are in his favor, as the eventual champion has emerged from the final pairing on Sunday in 19 of the last 21 years.
Regardless of the outcome Sunday, Americans are likely to see more of the waning years of Hanson’s career. After accepting special temporary membership on the PGA Tour last month, he is likely to earn enough money to qualify for full membership in 2013.
