Trufant

Trufant outperformed Mardy Gilyard in special teams practices. The Jets don’t need cornerback help; Trufant will cover kicks if he’s active on game day.

Trufant is buried on the depth chart, so his absence isn’t going to hurt the Jets too much. Ellis Lankster, who participated in Jets training camp, will be among those who get a look as Trufant’s replacement.

Trufant had picked up extra snaps after the Jets came out in a 3-1-7 formation to counter the Patriots’ spread offense. He’s questionable to return.

The Trufant brothers made history Sunday with Isaiah and Marcus squaring off in the same game, hours after younger brother Desmond helped the University of Washington to victory on the same field. The reunion didn’t last long, as Isaiah injured his knee while tackling Leon Washington on a punt return. The special teamer is an exclusive rights free agent in 2013.

It should be a minor issue for the Jets as long as Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Kyle Wilson are able to stay on the field against the Dolphins. Strickland should be back in Week 7, though Trufant could be sidelined longer with what’s been described as a “significant” hamstring injury.

Trufant, 31, played just 72 snaps on defense last season but registered eight tackles on special teams. The Jets failed to tender him an offer as a restricted free agent. Trufant reunites with Mike Pettine and will compete for a roster spot.

Trufant still isn’t recovered from his 2013 knee injury. He signed a two-year deal in March, but was limited all camp and missed Cleveland’s final three preseason games. Trufant could be released with an injury settlement.

The Jets will use Tevaseu as defensive line depth, specifically for insurance behind DE Shaun Ellis (knee). Trufant played limited snaps during his brief stint on the active roster.

The Jets were hoping to re-sign Trufant to a futures deal until the Eagles swooped in. Just a special teams prospect, Trufant is listed at 5'7/160. He is the younger brother of Marcus, and spent the last two seasons in the UFL.

Coach Rex Ryan indicated that Trufant had been practicing well and he wanted to see if the 2010 Defensive Player of the Year in the UFL can contribute in the playoffs.
