Freeny

Angerer has been limited to individual drills since breaking his foot in the preseason opener. He hasn’t been ruled out for Week 5 against the Packers, but he’ll likely be eased back in slowly. Backup Jerrell Freeman has been solid, racking up 27 tackles, one sack, one interception and one forced fumble in his three starts.

The signing of Freeny rounds out Miami’s 53-man roster. He will contribute on special teams if active. Freeny was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers in 2011.

Freeny is not a big factor on defense, but he is a solid special teamer and good depth at linebacker. He will back up Jamie Collins this season.

Freeney was mostly a special teamer going into the year, but managed a small rotational role with 97 snaps before going down. New England also sent TE Greg Scruggs to IR. Geneo Grissom and DT Anthony Johnson were promoted from the practice squad.

Freeny logged 97 snaps last year before landing on I.R. with a shoulder injury. He’s mostly a special teams player at this point.

Binns tore his ACL and MCL at the beginning of training camp last summer and spent the year on I.R. Freeny played 26 snaps on defense but amassed ten tackles on special teams.

The deal includes a $500,000 signing bonus. Freeny played just 42 snaps on defense a year ago but recorded 11 tackles as a staple of the Patriots’ special teams. He will continue in that role.

Freeny was listed as questionable for most of the game before finally being ruled out. He’ll be in a race to get cleared for Week 15.

We are not sure how one goes about dislocating only part of the wrist, but it somehow sounds even more painful. Freeny is unlikely to play this week, but the Patriots “hope” he can return this season. Jerod Mayo should see more snaps with Freeny sidelined.

Freeny appeared in six games last season with three teams including the Patriots, who he played 18 games for the previous two seasons. That connection with new Lions coach Matt Patricia likely played a big role in this signing. Freeny will compete for a roster spot in camp.
