Lions selected New Mexico State CB Jonte Green with the No. 196 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft.

Green was a college cornerback. The Lions announced him as generically a “defensive back,” so they may try Green at free safety or are only projecting him as a special teamer. Green goes 5-foot-11, 191, and was a second-team All-WAC pick by the conference’s coaches in 2011. He has short arms, but did well to run a 4.41 forty-yard dash at New Mexico State’s Pro Day.

Lions No. 196 overall pick Jonte Green will be in the mix for the starting cornerback job opposite Chris Houston.

Detroit was high on Green throughout the draft process and it sounds like he’ll enter a competition with No. 85 pick Dwight Bentley, No. 148 pick Chris Greenwood, and veteran Aaron Berry for a starting job. At 5'11/191, Green has 4.41 speed and is likely to end up contributing as no more than a dime back.

Lions signed No. 196 overall pick CB Jonte Green to a four-year contract.

At just under 6'0" and 191, Green offers the requisite size and 4.41 speed with experience excelling in man coverage at New Mexico. Although he’s set to enter a competition with Jacob Lacey, Aaron Berry and fellow rookies Dwight Bentley and Chris Greenwood for a starting job, his most likely role is special teams.

    Bills waived CB Jonte Green.

A 2012 sixth-round pick of the Lions, Green was signed to a reserve/future pact in January. He last appeared in a game in 2013. Getting waived at this stage of the offseason bodes poorly for his NFL future.
