Titans signed LB Kevin Malast off the Jaguars’ practice squad.
The corresponding roster move will probably be to place Barrett Ruud (groin) on injured reserve. Malast is a former undrafted free agent out of Rutgers.
  • Defensive Lineman
Titans placed DT Leger Douzable (shoulder), OG Ryan Durand, LB Kevin Malast, and CB Terrence Wheatley on injured reserve, ending their seasons.
Douzable had been dividing his time between end and tackle before coming down with a shoulder injury. An effective rotational run-stopper, Douzable had signed a one-year, $700,000 contract in April.
  • FA Linebacker #50
    Titans waived LB Kevin Malast.
Malast hasn’t appeared in a game since 2011. Getting waived at this stage of the offseason is never good news for a fringe player’s NFL future.
  • FA Linebacker #50
Bears signed LB Kevin Malast, OL Johan Asiata, TE Kevin Brock, and FB Will Ta’ufo’ou to reserve/future contracts.
“Futures” signees are typically practice bodies for the offseason. Malast, a 2009 undrafted free agent from Rutgers, did look pretty good last preseason.
  • Linebacker
Bears waived LBs Tim Shaw, Kelvin Smith, and Kevin Malast.
Shaw wasn’t a factor on defense, but he was one of the league’s premier special teamers last year. His release is a reminder that NFL teams take an “easy come, easy go” approach to special teamers. Malast was undrafted out of Rutgers in 2009. Smith has been a camp body in several locales over the past few seasons.
  • FA Quarterback #7
Titans signed QB Brett Ratliff, LS Jake Ingram, and LB Kevin Malast to reserve/future contracts.
The Titans have a slew of free agent linebackers, so Malast is insurance for the offseason. Ratliff is the biggest name, having bounced between the Jets and Browns. The 25-year-old still hasn’t thrown a regular season pass.
