Ryan was released in late August after posting a lackluster 4.88 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and 35/29 K/BB ratio across 48 innings (39 appearances) for Triple-A Memphis. The 30-year-old lefty signed a minor league contract with the Cardinals last offseason and has made 190 career relief appearances since 2014.

Ryan, 30, pitched well for the Cubs in 2019 before struggling the last two seasons. He’ll give the Cards another left-handed option for their bullpen.

Ryan chose to test the open market after being outrighted off the Cubs’ 40-man roster. The southpaw has allowed 10 earned runs in 13 1/3 innings with the Cubs this season.

This move frees up a 40-man roster spot for Austin Romine, who is back from the 60-day IL. Ryan had surrendered 10 earned runs in 13 1/3 innings of work this season with Chicago.

Ryan has pitched to a 5.54 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, and 8/5 K/BB ratio in 13 innings of relief this season with Chicago.

Ryan will essentially take the bullpen spot left vacant by the Andrew Chafin trade. He’s allowed four earned runs in just 4 1/3 major league innings this year for Chicago.

Ryan has been shuttled back-and-forth between the majors and minors this season. Dillon Maples is back from the injured list to take his spot in the bullpen.

Ryan was removed from the Cubs’ 40-man roster earlier this season but has earned his way back with some nice work for Iowa.

Ryan’s latest stint in the majors lasted just one day and he didn’t make an appearance. He’s clearing out to make room for Adbert Alzolay’s return.

Ryan was designated for assignment back in May, but stayed in the organization and now will have a chance to help the Chicago bullpen in the middle innings. Cory Abbott is sent back to Triple-A in a corresponding move.
