Mulligan

Mulligan played roughly 40 percent of the Jets’ 2011 offensive snaps, earning derision for too many penalties. The tender would have cost the Jets $1.3 million, a figure they are unwilling to pay for a backup blocking specialist. Mulligan could be brought back at a lower salary down the road.

The Nashville Tennessean confirms Gay will join Tracy Porter and Marcus Trufant as cornerbacks visiting Denver. Gay has already visited the Titans and Cardinals, and the Steelers want him back as well. Mulligan is purely a blocking specialist while Jacob Tamme, scheduled to visit Denver this week, is purely a receiving tight end.

A blocking specialist, Mulligan played 40 percent of the Jets’ offensive snaps last season, but caught just five passes for 58 yards. He won’t be offered a role as a pass catcher on the open market.

Mulligan, a 27-year-old blocking specialist, will replace outgoing free agent Billy Bajema in the role. Mulligan knows new Rams OC Brian Schottenheimer’s scheme from their time together with the Jets. He has six career catches.

28-year-old Mulligan was due just $725,000, so the Rams really must not have liked his potential. He’s a strong run blocker, but offers little else.

A 28-year-old blocking tight end, Mulligan could help Green Bay in the Tom Crabtree role but offers less receiving ability. He can also play special teams.

As previously reported, Jake Ballard was also brought in for a tryout. The Ravens desperately need another body at tight end, but neither Ballard nor Mulligan would be the answer.

Mulligan was cut last week. He’ll block and play special teams if he’s active for Thursday’s game against the Jets.

The blocking specialist lost out to Andrew Quarless for those duties.

27-year-old Mulligan is an in-line blocker with some special teams value. The Patriots may have just been updating their emergency free-agent list.
