Tigers president Scott Harris said Monday that manager A.J. Hinch’s contract was extended earlier this year.
The Tigers have kept Hinch’s contract information quiet though the years, but he’s now been extended twice since he was hired in October 2020 after finishing a one-year suspension in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal and being fired by Houston. He’s gone 394-416 in five years with Detroit, though that improves to 173-151 the last two years. Overall, he’s 964-868 since debuting as a manager with the Diamondbacks in 2009.

Stephen Vogt won the American League Manager of the Year Award.
Vogt, who led Cleveland to a 92-win season in his managerial debut, received 27 of 30 first-place votes to take home the hardware just two years after his final season of his playing career. Royals skipper Matt Quatraro came in second and Tigers manager A.J. Hinch finished third in balloting.

A.J. Hinch, Matt Quatraro and Stephen Vogt have been named finalists for the American League Manager of the Year Award.
It’s a bit jarring to see three managers from the same division in the mix here, but the trio are all deserving candidates after leading the Tigers, Royals, and Guardians, respectively, to the postseason. Hinch might be a slight favorite after engineering a pretty unexpected turnaround in Detroit last season, guiding the club to an 86-win season and a playoff berth. The same goes for Quatraro, who took Kansas City from 56 wins in his managerial debut to 86 victories this past season. Vogt was at the helm for 92 wins and an AL Central division title in his managerial debut.

Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports that the Tigers have signed manager A.J. Hinch to a long-term contract extension.
No word yet on the duration or the financials, but Hinch was already signed through the 2025 season, so it stands to reason that he’ll be in Motown for the foreseeable future. The 49-year-old skipper is coming off of his best season in his three years with the Tigers — going 78-84 and finishing in second place in the vaunted American League Central. They’re not completely out of their rebuilding process just yet, but expect the Tigers to play competitive baseball in 2024.

The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports Joey Cora is joining the Tigers’ coaching staff.
Cora has spent the previous two seasons at the Mets’ third base coach and will now join A.J. Hinch’s staff in Detroit.

According to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, Alfredo Amezaga won’t return as the Tigers’ first base coach for the 2024 season.
Amezaga spent just one season on the team’s coaching staff, as he was hired on in September of 2022. The remainder of the team’s coaching staff — including all members of the core group — are expected to return. The Tigers exceeded expectations for the rebuilding club in 2023 — going 78-84 and finishing in second place in the laughable American League Central.

The Tigers have hired Tim Federowicz as catching coach.
The Tigers unveiled their full coaching staff on Thursday, with Federowicz as the latest addition. Federowicz was once a highly-regarded prospect with the Dodgers and appeared in 163 major league games, but he announced his retirement in December of 2021 before a stint as a manager with the Mariners’ Triple-A affiliate last season.

According to Kendall Rogers of D1Baseball.com the Tigers are hiring Robin Lund as an assistant pitching coach.
Lund will work with fellow assistant pitching coach Juan Nieves under pitching coach Chris Fetter and manager A.J. Hinch in Detroit. Lund has spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach with the University of Iowa. He spent 17 years as a college professor before starting his coaching career at Iowa and is expected to focus on the biomechanics aspects of the Tigers’ pitching department.

The Tigers will not bring back hitting coach Scott Coolbaugh next season.
