Orioles acquired RHP Alex Hoppe, RHP Brock Moore and RHP Harrison Kreiling from the Mariners for OF Taylor Ward.

This seems like a weak return for Baltimore, but maybe one of the arms will develop. Hoppe, 27, is the one with major league experience, having posted a 5.79 ERA and a 34/11 K/BB in 28 innings out of Seattle’s pen this year. He’s a pure reliever with upper-90s gas but a history of control problems. He still needs to refine his slider if he’s going to emerge as a force in short relief.

The Mariners are acquiring Taylor Ward from the Mariners, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The Orioles will receive Alex Hoppe, Brock Moore and Harrison Kreiling in return, according to the Baltimore Sun’s Matt Weyrich. Ward’s offensive profile has radically changed this year, but he’s remained quite valuable in the process. The Mariners will likely play him in right and bat him somewhere near the top of the order. The ballpark change could bring down his fantasy value a bit.

Mariners optioned RHP Alex Hoppe to Triple-A Tacoma.

The 27-year-old Hoppe, who was picked up from the Red Sox and added to the 40-man roster in November, gave up 10 earned runs with a 9/6 K/BB in 6 2/3 innings this spring. It’s going to take improved command to make him a major league reliever, but he definitely has the arm.
