Astros signed RHP Anthony Maldonado to a minor league contract.
The Astros will roll the dice on Maldonado after he posted a lackluster 7.20 ERA across 25 innings over 22 appearances between the Athletics and Marlins over the past two seasons. The 27-year-old righty has missed plenty of bats in the upper minors but it hasn’t translated to sustained success at the highest level. He’ll compete for a spot in Houston’s bullpen next spring.
  • ATH Starting Pitcher #51
Athletics sent LHP Jared Shuster, LHP Ben Bowden and RHP Anthony Maldonado outright to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Bowden and Maldonado will become free agents. Shuster, who was claimed off waivers from the White Sox in August and went on to finish the season in the minors, doesn’t have that right, so he’ll stay in the organization for now.

He’ll give manager Mark Kotsay another option to deploy in the middle innings.

Maldonado passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment last week to make room for reliever Elvis Alvarado. He’s posted significant strikeout rates at the Triple-A level, which makes him an intriguing relief project for at least a few more years.
