Maldonado

The Astros will roll the dice on Maldonado after he posted a lackluster 7.20 ERA across 25 innings over 22 appearances between the Athletics and Marlins over the past two seasons. The 27-year-old righty has missed plenty of bats in the upper minors but it hasn’t translated to sustained success at the highest level. He’ll compete for a spot in Houston’s bullpen next spring.

Bowden and Maldonado will become free agents. Shuster, who was claimed off waivers from the White Sox in August and went on to finish the season in the minors, doesn’t have that right, so he’ll stay in the organization for now.

He’s posted significant strikeout rates at the Triple-A level, which makes him an intriguing relief project for at least a few more years.

Maldonado was claimed off waivers from the Marlins in November after registering a 5.68 ERA and 1.47 WHIP across 19 MLB innings and a 4.66 ERA in Triple-A with a 53/22 K/BB ratio in 46 1/3 innings. He was designated for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster for Elvis Alvarado, who was claimed off waivers from the Pirates.
