Tigers selected the contract of OF Ben Malgeri from Triple-A Toledo.

Assuming he gets into a game, Malgeri will have a chance to make his MLB debut after being an 18th round pick out of Northeastern in 2021. The 26-year-old will likely be a bench bat in this stint with the Tigers, but the right-handed hitting outfielder could see some starts against left-handed pitching.

Tigers reassigned C Josue Briceño, OF Ben Malgeri, and RHP Matt Seelinger to minor league camp.

Briceño is one of the top prospects in the Tigers’ system, but he will be sidelined for a few months after wrist surgery. Malgeri made it as high as Double-A last year, while Seelinger had a solid season, posting a 2.74 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 75/25 K/BB ratio in 65 2/3 innings out of the bullpen at Double-A and Triple-A.

Ben Malgeri went 3-for-3 with four RBI off the bench to lead the Tigers past the Phillies 7-6 on Saturday.

Malgeri was brought over from minor league camp for the day and made quite the contribution in driving in the majority of Detroit’s runs. A 2021 18th-round pick, Malgeri hit .252/.343/.409 with 12 homers and 20 steals in Double-A last season. He strikes out too much to rate as a major league prospect.
