Astros’ manager Joe Espada told reporters on Saturday that Bennett Sousa is dealing with a low-grade flexor/pronator strain.
He’ll be shut down from throwing completely over the next two weeks before being re-evaluated in early September. It sounds like he’s going to be out for a while though with a return before the regular season concludes no guarantee.

Astros placed LHP Bennett Sousa on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to August 20, with left elbow inflammation.
Sousa had been the next man up as the primary left-hander at the back end of the Astros’ bullpen in the wake of Josh Hader’s shoulder injury, but now he’ll join his fellow southpaw on the injured list instead. No word yet on how long the Astros expect Sousa to be shelved for.

Josh Hader (shoulder) said Saturday that he’s unlikely to pitch again in the regular season, but could potentially return for the playoffs.
Hader elaborated that it would take him at least three weeks to build up his arm strength and stamina following a three-week shutdown, which doesn’t leave any time for him to return before the regular season wraps up in exactly six weeks. The 31-year-old All-Star closer hit the injured list earlier this week with a left shoulder strain. It’s a brutal development for managers heading into the fantasy playoffs, but it’s a positive update that he won’t require surgery. His extended absence elevates Bryan Abreu to the closer role in Houston with Bennett Sousa likely to vulture the occasional save chance.

Josh Hader went unused Monday with the Astros possessing a one-run lead in the ninth against the Red Sox.
Enyel De Los Santos and Bennett Sousa worked the ninth, with Sousa getting a one-out save. Hader hasn’t worked since throwing 36 pitches on Friday, so something is definitely wrong here. The Astros will probably have to cop to it in the upcoming postgame interviews,

Bennett Sousa picked up a save despite allowing a run during Wednesday’s relief appearance versus the Rockies.
Sousa gave up three hits with no walks, and he struck out one. The run didn’t really matter in terms of Houston winning the game or the 30-year-old picking up his third save, but it did push his ERA up to 1.95; a number that you’ll still happily sign up for. Sousa isn’t likely to see more save chances, but it’s not out of the question he’d get more chances if something were to happen to Josh Hader.

Bennett Sousa struck out two batters in a scoreless tenth inning to earn the save against the Guardians on Saturday.
Josh Hader had tossed a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts to send the game to extras. Sousa got the save chance after Houston took a two-run lead in the top of the tenth, putting Hader in line for the win. Sousa worked around a walk, stranding two runners with two strikeouts to convert his first save.

Astros recalled LHP Bennett Sousa from Triple-A Sugar Land.
Sousa was recalled late Tuesday to fill Rafael Montero’s spot in Houston’s bullpen after the veteran righty was shipped to the Braves. The 30-year-old southpaw missed all of last year recovering from surgery to address thoracic outlet syndrome but was a quality middle relief option previously.

Astros optioned LHP Bennett Sousa to Triple-A Sugar land and reassigned C Collin Price to minor league camp.
Sousa missed the 2024 season after undergoing surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. The 29-year-old could be an option at some point in 2025 for Houston, but not for fantasy players.

Astros transferred LHP Bennett Sousa to the 60-day injured list.
The 29-year-old hurler will miss the 2024 season after undergoing surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. Nothing has changed in his prognosis, this was merely done as a procedural move to free up a spot on their 40-man roster for Jacob Amaya who was acquired in a trade from the Marlins on Saturday.

Bennett Sousa underwent season-ending surgery on Wednesday for thoracic outlet syndrome.
Sousa landed on the injured list at the conclusion of spring training with left shoulder inflammation and will wind up missing the remainder of the season. It’s a pretty big loss for Houston’s bullpen depth as the 28-year-old southpaw was one of their better left-handed relief options.
