Yankees reassigned OF Marco Luciano and INF Braden Shewmake to minor league camp.
Neither player was a serious candidate to crack the Yankees’ Opening Day roster, but Luciano definitely didn’t help his cause during Grapefruit League play. He hit just .040 (1-for-25) with 10 strikeouts. Yikes. He’ll look to get back on track at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start the 2026 campaign.
  • NYY Infield #95
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Oswaldo Cabrera (ankle) is “TBD” for Opening Day.
Cabrera is going through drills and appears to be moving well, but has not practiced sliding yet and has not appeared in any spring games. Cabrera is set to begin the season as a utility player off the bench, so if he were to start the year on the injured list, that would open up a chance for Amed Rosario to see more playing time and Paul DeJong, Zack Short, Braden Shewmake, or Jorbit Vivas, who all have no minor league options, to make the Yankees Opening Day roster
  • NYY Infield #89
Yankees sent INF Braden Shewmake outright to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Shewmake had been designated for assignment late last week but passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as extra infield depth for the Yankees. He’ll stay in major league camp as a non-roster invitee.
  • NYY Infield #89
Yankees designated INF Braden Shewmake for assignment.
The Bombers needed to clear a spot on their 40-man roster for the addition of Osvaldo Bido on Thursday and unfortunately Shewmake drew the short straw this time around. The 28-year-old infielder spent the 2025 season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre where he slashed .244/.318/.362 with four homers, 29 RBI and a 52/30 K/BB ratio over 315 plate appearances. There’s a decent chance he’ll pass through waivers unclaimed and continue to function as extra infield depth for the Yankees.
  • NYY Shortstop #89
Yankees optioned INF Braden Shewmake to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre; reassigned RHP Wilking Rodríguez to minor league camp.
Shewmake is an excellent defender, but simply hasn’t hit at the highest level over the past few years. At 27 years old, he projects as an up-and-down bench option moving forward. He figures to get a chance in New York at some point after being claimed off waivers last month from the Royals.
  • NYY Shortstop #17
Yankees claimed INF Braden Shewmake off waivers from the Royals.
Shewmake was designated for assignment Friday and spent just a month in the Kansas City organization. He now joins the Yankees, and assuming he sticks around, he provides some depth in the infield; likely at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
  • KC Shortstop #17
Royals designated INF Braden Shewmake for assignment.
The 27-year-old infielder had just been claimed off of waivers from the White Sox in early January, but he gets the boot from the club’s 40-man roster to make room for Carlos Estévez on Friday. There’s a decent chance that Shewmake could slide through waivers this time and continue to function as extra depth for the Royals.
  • KC Shortstop #17
Royals claimed INF Braden Shewmake off waivers from the White Sox.
Shewmake was designated for assignment by the White Sox after they traded for Tyler Gilbert. The 27-year-old was a first-round pick in 2019, and he’ll get a chance to compete for a utility role with Kansas City. Odds are that he’ll be depth in Omaha to open the 2025 season, assuming he isn’t designated for assignment before the year begins.
  • CWS Shortstop #17
White Sox designated INF Braden Shewmake for assignment.
Shewmake, 27, is removed from the 40-man roster to make room for recently-acquired Tyler Gilbert. Shewmake was a first-round pick who showed some promise early after being drafted, but has become just organizational fodder.
  • CWS Shortstop #17
White Sox optioned INF Braden Shewmake to Triple-A Charlotte.
With Corey Julks joining the active roster on Friday, the White Sox needed to clear a spot for him and it looks like Shewmake was the odd-man out this time around. The speedy 26-year-old infielder hit just .125/.134/.203 with a homer, four RBI and five stolen bases in 67 plate appearances at the big league level.
