Roxby, 27, was one of a number of non-roster players the Giants had to turn to late in the year as they dealt with a glut of injuries, and he wound up allowing two runs over 5 1/3 innings during the final three weeks. He’s probably not going to stick on the Nationals’ 40-man all winter, but maybe he’ll clear waivers next time around.

Roxby returns to San Francisco’s relief mix in place of an injured Blade Tidwell (elbow). The 27-year-old rookie allowed two runs over two innings of work during his first stint in the majors a couple weeks ago.

Roxby heads back to the minors after allowing two runs over two innings for San Francisco after being called up in late August.

With Carson Whisenhunt being moved to the 60-day injured list, it will be Braxton Roby who comes up to take his place. Roby was acquired from the Reds in January for Taylor Rogers. The 27-year-old has pitched to a 4.11 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 53/26 K/BB ratio in 57 innings at Triple-A, all out of the bullpen.

Roxby has yet to pitch above Double-A and heads to San Francisco after registering a lackluster 5.21 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 65/24 K/BB ratio across 48 1/3 innings (39 appearances) last year for Double-A Chattanooga. The 25-year-old is merely extra organizational relief depth for the Giants, who manage to clear $12 million off their books by shipping Rogers to Cincinnati. The move leaves just Erik Miller and Joey Lucchesi as left-handed relief options for the Giants entering spring training.

Rogers represents an interesting addition for Cincinnati’s high-leverage mix to help bridge the gap to closer Alexis Díaz before hitting free agency next offseason. The 34-year-old veteran southpaw has averaged 63 relief appearances over the past three years and posted a strong 3.06 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 128/47 K/BB ratio across 11 2/3 innings (124 appearances) over the past two seasons for San Francisco.
