The move comes less than 24 hours after the Rangers fired offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker, who spearheaded the club’s hitting efforts since 2022. Boone, the older brother of Yankees manager Aaron Boone, hasn’t held a coaching position in the big leagues since retiring from a 14-year career back in 2005. The Rangers lineup has gotten off to an extremely slow start, ranking 29th in runs scored (113) through 35 games. The hope here is that a simplified approach with Boone will resonate with the club’s veteran core and help turn things around.

Boone has been having trouble seeing the ball all year and it is hoped that the procedure will have a positive effect on his batting ability next season.

Jolbert Cabrera will take Boone’s place for the time being.

Mariners’ manager Bob Melvin may have other ideas, as he would prefer to sit Boone out the entire weekend series against the Yankees to ensure his injury fully heals. In either case, it looks as if Boone will be safe to start next week.

Boone had been the only major leaguer to reach base in every game of the season until yesterday. He’s got a .370 on-base percentage, and his seven April home runs are the most he’s hit in April in his career.

He finished the game, but was icing his groin muscle after the contest. If Boone doesn’t play tonight, at least you’ll know why.

Boone, who has had minor back problems all season, probably needed the rest. He should be back in the Seattle lineup tonight.

Boone is day-to-day.

Mark McLemore replaced Boone at second base.

All the more reason why Boone will not be traded to a contender this year.
