Stubbs

Stubbs wasn’t among those listed as non-roster invitees to Blue Jays spring training so he’ll open camp on the minor-league side. The 29-year-old backstop got into exactly one contest for the Nationals last season after spending six seasons in the minors. He’s merely organizational depth for Toronto heading into next season.

Stubbs is removed from the 40-man roster. The 28-year-old veteran will be an org depth piece if he sticks with the Nationals through the winter.

With Jorge Alfaro joining the team, Stubbs, who was called up Friday, loses his spot one day after catching a shutout in his major league debut against the Marlins.

Alfaro just became a free agent after playing in 82 games for the Brewers’ Triple-A affiliate and batting .244/.285/.420 with 15 homers in 326 plate appearances. He figures to take the spot of C.J. Stubbs, unless the Nationals want to go with three catchers.

Stubbs has hung around for a while, and will get a chance to make his MLB debut if/when he gets into a game. A cool story, but not one that has any relevance to a fantasy lineup.

Stubbs is getting the call to the majors for the first time in his career after Drew Millas fractured his finger during Wednesday’s game. He’ll operate in a backup role behind Riley Adams.

The 28-year-old backstop split his 2024 season between the Astros and the Nationals organizations, slashing a combined .187/.314/.335 with eight homers and 25 RBI in 300 plate appearances at the Double-A and Triple-A levels. He’ll continue to function as organizational catching depth for the Nats.
