Freeman

Freeman heads north of the border as additional relief depth for the defending American League champions. The 28-year-old righty was jettisoned from Chicago’s 40-man roster last June following five appearances for the White Sox at the highest level. He’ll presumably open the year at Triple-A Buffalo.

No team thought it was worth seeing if Freeman’s control issues could be fixed, so he’ll return to Charlotte. Since it’s the first time the 27-year-old reliever has been outrighted, he’ll have to accept the assignment.

Freeman is removed from the 40-man roster to make room for a host of moves made by the White Sox. He’ll hit the waiver wire, and if he goes unclaimed he’ll report back to Charlotte.

Freeman allowed two runs on five hits in 3 1/3 innings with the White Sox this season. After pitching a scoreless inning on Wednesday, the White Sox may have just been looking for a fresh arm for the bullpen.

Freeman made his major league debut last month and allowed two runs over 2 1/3 innings in his four appearances. He has a 3.66 ERA and a 19/15 K/BB in 19 2/3 innings in the minors this season.

Freeman returns to the minors to clear a spot on Chicago’s active roster for Yoendys Gómez, who was claimed off waivers from the Dodgers earlier this weekend. The 27-year-old righty struggled in four relief appearances for the White Sox after being called up back on May 4.

Freeman will get his first shot in the big leagues after making seven straight scoreless appearances for Triple-A Charlotte following a promotion last month from Double-A Birmingham. He’ll likely operate in middle relief situations.
