Pirates optioned RHP Cam Sanders to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Sanders had just been recalled from Triple-A on Friday but he’ll head right back there after giving up four runs on three hits and a walk in just 2/3 of an inning in his lone appearance (54.00 ERA). Sanders has terrific stuff and not much left to prove in the minor leagues, so he should get another opportunity to work out of the Pirates’ bullpen before long.

Pirates recalled RHP Cam Sanders from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Sanders struggled as a prospect with the Cubs, but the Pirates signed him last season, and he was electric in the minor leagues, posting a 2.12 ERA with 14 saves and a 62/26 K/BB ratio in 51 innings across Double-A and Triple-A. This season, he has allowed two runs on four hits in six innings at Triple-A with an 11/7 K/BB ratio. The walks are obviously a concern, but he has high-end swing-and-miss stuff and could pitch himself into a late-inning role in the long-term if he can show improved command.
  • PIT Shortstop #25
Pirates optioned C Rafael Flores and RHP Cam Sanders to Triple-A Indianapolis. Reassigned INF Alika Williams, LHP Joe La Sorsa and RHPs Chris Devenski and Carson Fulmer to minor league camp.
On the pitching side, Devenski had a shot at making the team’s Opening Day bullpen, but struggled to a 6.75 ERA and 1.69 WHIP over 5 1/3 innings during Grapefruit League play. Williams had a solid spring offensively, hitting .258 (8-for-31) with a homer and seven RBI, but that wasn’t enough to secure a spot on the Pirates’ Opening Day bench.
