Carlos Cortes is hitting leadoff on Tuesday against the Cubs.
Cortes continues to receive opportunities atop the Athletics’ lineup against right-handed starters. He was moved to the top of the order back in mid-May and hasn’t looked back, hitting .273 (9-for-33) with one homer and a 4/10 K/BB ratio in 11 games since May 18.

Carlos Cortes went 2-for-4 with a home run and a walk as the A’s defeated the Padres 5-2 on Sunday afternoon.
Cortes led off the ballgame with a solo shot off Michael King on an 0-2 count. The 28-year-old breakout has walked more than he has struck out this season, and he was recently given the leadoff role against right-handers. That premium lineup spot could help with counting stats to offset any possible regression Cortes faces this summer.

Carlos Cortes is on the bench for a second straight game Saturday to make room for Henry Bolte in the A’s lineup.
Cortes has cooled off of late, but he’s still hitting .343/.400/.556 overall with just 10 strikeouts and fine EV numbers in 110 plate appearances. He has about 300 points of OPS on Tyler Soderstrom and 400 points on Lawrence Butler, the two guys flanking Bolte in center tonight. What he doesn’t have, however, is a long-term contract guaranteed through 2031 or ’32.
  • ATH Center Fielder
Athletics selected the contract of OF Henry Bolte from Triple-A Las Vegas.
It’s not hyperbolic to suggest that Bolte has been one of the hottest hitters in the entire minors this season, slashing an absurd .348/.418/.658 with 12 homers and 17 steals across 37 games in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. The 22-year-old offers an interesting blend of power and speed, and has made some noticeable strides in the contact department, while also adding some additional hard contact this season. His biggest obstacle to immediate fantasy relevance is how the Athletics get his bat into the lineup as he figures to platoon with Carlos Cortes in left field for now. He’s talented enough to warrant a speculative roster spot in all fantasy formats, but managers should keep expectations in check as he adjusts to everyday life in the big leagues.

Carlos Cortes drove in the Athletics’ lone run and swiped a base during Sunday afternoon’s loss to the Orioles.
Cortes hit a sacrifice fly off of Chris Bassitt in the second inning to open the scoring in the ballgame. He then singled in the seventh inning and swiped second base, but was cut down at the plate on a perfect throw from Leody Taveras with what would have been the tying run. He finished the afternoon 1-for-3 and is now hitting a blistering .355/.408/.570 with four homers, 15 RBI and one stolen base in 103 plate appearances on the season.
  • ATH Left Fielder #21
Tyler Soderstrom (neck) is out of the lineup for Wednesday’s game against the Royals.
A sizzling-hot Carlos Cortes gets the nod in left field as Soderstrom receives some additional time off to rest and recover following a precautionary exit from Tuesday’s game. The 24-year-old was lifted to undergo evaluation for a possible concussion after a diving catch attempt in left field. All indications are that he cleared concussion protocol. Athletics manager Mark Kotsay told reporters he’s still dealing with some whiplash and could wind up missing Thursday’s series finale as well.
  • ATH Right Fielder #26
Carlos Cortes is on the bench for Tuesday’s series opener against the Royals.
Cortes, who is hitting .538 (14-for-26) with three homers over his last seven games, takes a seat with lefty Kris Bubic on the hill in this one. He’ll continue to sit against most left-handed starters, which is going to happen a bunch over the next few days with the Royals and Guardians on tap for the rest of the week.
  • ATH Left Fielder #26
Carlos Cortes went 3-for-4 with a two-run triple to help the A’s to a 2-1 win over the Rangers on Sunday.
The first-inning triple was well struck to deep center, but Evan Carter really should have caught it; it tipped off his glove after he got a mediocre jump on a ball hit over his head. That was all of the scoring for the A’s on the day, but it proved sufficient. Cortes has been excellent in 2026, and now has a .377/.433/.689 slash to show for it. It’s time to take this seriously.
  • ATH Catcher #23
Shea Langeliers is in the leadoff spot for Saturday’s game against the Rangers.
It appears to be a matchup-specific wrinkle with Langeliers moving up to the leadoff spot to face Rangers southpaw MacKenzie Gore. Nick Kurtz moves into the second spot in the order with Colby Thomas hitting third and Tyler Soderstrom in the cleanup spot. Lefty Carlos Cortes retreats to the bench following Friday’s two-homer effort.
  • ATH Left Fielder #26
Carlos Cortes went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in an 8-1 win over the Rangers on Friday.
It’s time to take notice of Cortes. His first inning home run was part of the three-homer onslaught the top of the Athletics’ order greeted Rangers’ starter Nathan Eovaldi with, but his second was more impressive. With two outs in the fifth inning of a 3-1 game after Eovaldi had settled in, Cortes hit a 409 foot moonshot that broke this game open. That blast came on the seventh pitch of that at-bat on a cutter that was about an inch off the inside edge. Cortes still found a way to get around on it and he launched it deep into the right field stands. Through 56 at-bats this season, he has a .339/.403/.625 slash line with more walks than strikeouts and solid underlying power metrics. He’s also hitting third against right-handed pitchers in this talented Athletics lineup. There are all the signs of a true breakout here.
