Carlos Cortes homered twice to lead the Athletics to a 3-0 win over the Reds on Friday.
Cortes smashed a solo homer off Brady Singer in the third and another off Chase Burns in the eighth. Just like we all predicted. The 2018 third-round pick has three homers on the season in 31 games, and he’s hit an impressive .328 with a .925 OPS in the process. Cortes should be able to stick around because of his versatility, but whether that leads to fantasy-relevancy in the coming years is a different story.
  • ATH 1st Baseman #16
Nick Kurtz (oblique) is not in the lineup for Saturday’s game against the Rangers.
Kurtz felt soreness in his right oblique and was removed from Friday’s contest. He’ll get at least one more day off with Carlos Cortest playing left field and Tyler Soderstrom moving to first base. Kurtz should be considered day-to-day for now, but this is obviously a situation fantasy managers have to monitor.
  • ATH Center Fielder #33
JJ Bleday went 4-for-4 with a homer and three runs scored Sunday against the Diamondbacks.
Bleday, who was recalled prior to Friday’s game but didn’t play against righties either then or Saturday, got the start today even though the A’s were facing a left-hander in Eduardo Rodriguez, and he responded with his best game of the year. It’ll probably lead to some additional playing time for him at the expense of Carlos Cortes, as the A’s need to figure out whether he’ll be worth tendering as a first-time arbitration guy this winter. That he hardly seems to be in the team’s plans right now would have been hard to fathom a year ago, when he was on his way to a 43-double, 20-homer season. He’s batting .206/.298/.388 in 238 plate appearances this year.
  • ATH Left Fielder #26
Carlos Cortes is starting in right field and batting leadoff for the Athletics on Friday evening against the Astros in Houston.
The 28-year-old outfielder went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in his first big league start on Thursday night and it apparently earned him another start and a bump up in the lineup for Friday night’s battle against Astros’ right-hander Ryan Gusto. If this turns into a permanent thing for Cortes, he could muster up some fantasy value in deeper mixed leagues.
  • ATH Left Fielder #31
Athletics recalled OF Carlos Cortes from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Cortes receives his first call-up to the big leagues with Denzel Clarke landing on the injured list with an adductor strain. The 28-year-old outfielder was added to the Athletics’ 40-man roster last week and has put up some monster numbers this season in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, batting .322/.414/.603 with 17 homers in 71 games.
  • ATH Left Fielder #31
Athletics selected the contract of OF Carlos Cortes from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Cortes will remain stationed in the minors, but he’s been officially added to the Athletics’ 40-man roster. The 28-year-old corner outfielder has put up some impressive numbers this season, even for the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, slashing .321/.418/.603 with 16 homers across 299 plate appearances over 68 games. He’ll be making his big-league debut if he gets a call to West Sacramento at some point in the second half.
  • ATH 2nd Baseman #58
Athletics signed INF Carlos Cortes to a minor league contract.
The 27-year-old second baseman spent his first seven minor league seasons in the Mets’ organization. In 2024, he slashed .246/.330/.456 with 16 homers, 52 RBI, three stolen bases and a 60/37 K/BB ratio across 321 plate appearances at Triple-A Syracuse. He’ll add infield depth for the A’s at Triple-A Las Vegas.
