Padres optioned LHP JP Sears to Triple-A El Paso; reassigned OF Jase Bowen, OF Carlos Rodríguez, INF José Miranda and RHP Logan Gillaspie to minor league camp.
Miranda hit .304/.373/.522 this spring, but his fate was sealed when the Padres committed to Ty France as a bench guy. Sears probably would have had a rotation spot with a strong spring, but he turned in an 8.44 ERA in his three starts. If the Padres had it to do over again, they probably would have non-tendered him in November instead of retaining him for $2.75 million.
  • SD Center Fielder #70
Padres signed OF Carlos Rodríguez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Rodriguez was outrighted off Atlanta’s roster after the 2025 season. The 23-year-old forged just a .650 OPS in his time with Double-A Columbus and Triple-A Gwinnett, and doesn’t appear to be more than organizational depth.
  • ATL Relief Pitcher #53
Braves sent RHP Joel Payamps, LHP Austin Cox, C Chuckie Robinson and OF Carlos Rodríguez outright to Triple-A Gwinnett.
All will likely become free agents. Payamps, an excellent setup man for the Brewers in 2023 and ’24, struggled throughout last season and was designed for assignment by Milwaukee on Sept. 20. The Braves picked him up for the last seven days of the season, and he allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings. They might have some interest in bringing him back at a cut from the $3 million he earned in 2025.
  • ATL Center Fielder #84
Atlanta signed OF Carlos Rodriguez to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract.
Rodriguez joins Atlanta from the Brewers’ organization. The 23-year-old hit .284/.368/.374 in his time at the Double-A and Triple-A levels in 2024. He’ll compete for a fourth outfield spot in spring training with Atlanta, but won’t play enough for fantasy relevance even if he makes the club.
  • SD Center Fielder #70
Brewers added INF Gabe Holt, OF Carlos Rodríguez and RHP Bowden Francis to their 60-man player pool.
Rodriguez is the only one of the three who is ranked by MLB.com among the team’s top 30 prospects (he’s at No. 14). It’s unlikely that any of them will see action in the majors this season.
