Mets signed OF Dustin Martin to a minor league contract.
Martin was traded from the Mets to the Twins in July of 2007 as part of three-player deal involving Luis Castillo. And now he’s back in the Mets’ minor league system.

Twins acquired outfielder Dustin Martin and catcher Drew Butera from the Mets for second baseman Luis Castillo.
Martin, 23, was hitting .287/.358/.421 for St. Lucie. The 2006 26th-round pick has a decent all-around game, but it probably won’t be enough for him to put together a career as a reserve. The Twins definitely should have held on to Castillo if this was the best they could do. As a probable Type B free agent, he could have brought a supplemental first-round pick at the end of the year. The Twins could now turn second base over Alexi Casilla, though no decision on whether to recall him has been announced.

Dustin Martin had three hits Tuesday to raise his AFL average to .313.
The 24-year-old is hitting .461 when he doesn’t strike out. Unfortunately, he’s fanned 36 times in 112 at-bats after doing so 125 times in 510 at-bats for Double-A New Britain last season. Martin was one of two prospects the Twins got from the Mets for Luis Castillo at the 2007 trade deadline. He’s going to have to step it up in order to have a career as a reserve outfielder.
