    Cardinals signed C Ed Easley to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
    Easley, 27, has spent his entire career in the Diamondbacks’ minor league system and batted .334/.394/.478 with six home runs and 49 RBI over 87 games this past season in Triple-A. He’ll likely serve as minor league depth in 2014.

    Easley, 30, was hitless in six big league at-bats in 2015 but has been a productive batter at the Triple-A level with a .289/.360/.420 batting line. He’ll begin 2016 back in the minors.

    This should be the second-to-last round of cuts for the Bucs, who open the regular season Sunday afternoon against the Cardinals. There were no real surprises in this bunch. Easley will function as organizational depth at catcher this year for Pittsburgh.

    Easley, a 2007 supplemental first-round pick, is batting .274/.333/.393 in 201 at-bats this season. The Diamondbacks hope they don’t need another catcher anytime soon, but Easley is a pretty good prospect, even if he’s likely to spend most of his career as a backup.
