Red Sox reassigned pitchers Frank German, Melvin Adon, Helcris Olivarez, Alex Hoppe, and catchers Stephen Scott and Nathan Hickey to minor league camp on Wednesday.
Olivarez was signed to a minor league contract this offseason after missing all of 2023 due to shoulder surgery. He’s a high-velocity pitcher with a fastball in the triple-digits but he needs more refinement. German was once a potential closer-of-the-future in the Red Sox minor league system but was traded to Cincinnati in 2022 and has struggled in Triple-A over the past two seasons. He’s still 26 years old, so the Red Sox will hope to get his development back on track.

Red Sox signed RHP Frank German to a minor league contract.
German spent 2021 and ’22 in the Red Sox organization, making his major league debut last September, before being dropped from the 40-man and traded to the White Sox. He’s since had a disastrous season, posting an 8.55 ERA and walking 16 in 20 innings in the minors. Returning to Boston might be the thing to get him turned around; he was a pretty intriguing relief prospect a year ago and he’s just 25.
  • MLB Relief Pitcher #54
    Reds released RHP Frank German.
German went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment last month and will head out to test the free agent waters after compiling a calamitous 8.55 ERA, 2.30 WHIP and 29/16 K/BB ratio across 20 innings (20 appearances) this season in the minors. The 25-year-old relief prospect made five relief appearances last year for the Red Sox in his first taste of the big leagues.

Reds sent RHP Frank German outright to Triple-A Louisville.
German went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week and will remain with the Reds as organizational relief depth. The 25-year-old righty has yet to make an appearance in the majors this season after making five relief outings last year for the Red Sox.

  • CIN Relief Pitcher #54
Reds designated RHP Frank German for assignment.
German was claimed off waivers last month from the White Sox and hasn’t appeared in the majors this season. The 25-year-old righty made five relief appearances last year for the Red Sox and might have a shot at passing through waivers unclaimed.

  • CIN Relief Pitcher #54
Reds claimed RHP Franklin German off waivers from the White Sox.
German represents a worthwhile gamble for the rebuilding Reds as it was a bit of a surprise that both the Red Sox and White Sox have opted to jettison him earlier this year. The 25-year-old righty reliever hasn’t appeared in the majors this season after making five relief appearances last year for Boston.

  • CIN Relief Pitcher #54
White Sox designated RHP Franklin German for assignment.
German was scooped up off waivers from the Red Sox during spring training and has yet to appear in the majors this season. He’s been removed from Chicago’s 40-man roster and has a decent shot at being gobbled up off waivers as a relief project for another organization.

  • CIN Relief Pitcher #54
White Sox optioned RHP Franklin German to Triple-A Charlotte.
German was acquired from the Red Sox last month in a trade and will open the regular season back at the Triple-A level as extra organizational relief depth.

Franklin German struggled in a Cactus League start against the Diamondbacks on Monday, giving up four runs on six hits in just 1 1/3 innings of work.
Yikes. The right-hander also walked one and punched out one batter in the ballgame. All of the damage came in the second inning after he worked a scoreless frame to begin the day. That included a two-run double by Jake Hager and a two-run single by Corbin Carroll. German had pitched well this spring prior to this implosion and still sports a respectable 4.32 ERA and 1.44 WHIP with nine strikeouts over 8 1/3 innings.

White Sox acquired RHP Franklin German from the Red Sox for RHP Theo Denlinger.
German is an interesting addition for the White Sox’ relief mix after he was designated for assignment last week by the Red Sox. The hard-throwing 25-year-old righty made five relief appearances last season in the majors after compiling a solid 2.58 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and a 46/16 K/BB ratio over 38 1/3 innings (32 appearances) for Triple-A Worcester.
