Padres optioned RHP Garrett Hawkins to Triple-A El Paso; reassigned OF Tirso Ornelas to minors camp.

Hawkins flashed impressive fastball velocity this spring and figures to arrive as part of San Diego’s relief mix at some point this season. The 26-year-old was added to the club’s 40-man roster last November after compiling an impressive 1.50 ERA across 60 innings between High-A Fort Wayne and Double-A San Antonio last season.

Padres selected the contracts of RHP Garrett Hawkins and RHP Miguel Mendez from Triple-A El Paso.

San Diego clearly didn’t want to risk losing either Hawkins or Mendez in next month’s Rule 5 Draft so they opted to add both to their 40-man roster. Hawkins is the closest to the big leagues after looking extremely sharp with a 1.50 ERA across 60 innings between High-A Fort Wayne and Double-A San Antonio last season.
