Roberts, 28, did everything in his power to earn a spot in the Cubs’ bullpen this spring, posting a 1.50 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and a 4/2 K/BB ratio over six innings in six Cactus League appearances. He was simply facing an uphill battle against a crowded bullpen mix. He should be one of the first options at Triple-A Iowa that gets a shot with the big league club.

Hollowell rejoins Chicago’s bullpen mix for Tuesday’s game against the Brewers. The 27-year-old righty has allowed just one run over 6 1/3 innings (five appearances) this season at the big-league level.

Hollowell pitched four times in seven days with the Cubs, allowing one run in 4 1/3 innings.

Hollowell pitched two perfect innings in his one day with the Cubs last month. He’ll take on a low-leverage relief role in what will probably be another brief stint.

Hollowell was only with the Cubs for a day, but he did strike out two in a scoreless inning in his outing Tuesday. He’ll head back to the PCL, and Drew Pomeranz will take his roster spot.

He takes the spot of Jordan Wicks, who was sent down last night. Hollowell pitched in one game for the Cubs late last year after being claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks. He had a 4.26 ERA and a 10/3 K/BB in 6 1/3 innings out of Iowa’s pen this season.

The quartet will open the regular season back in the minors as extra organizational depth. Poteet was acquired from the Yankees back in mid-December as part of the Cody Bellinger trade and figures to be on the shortlist to return to Chicago should injuries arise to the starting rotation mix. Kilian made two appearances (one start) last year for the Cubs, while both Hollowell and Neely made a handful of relief appearances last season at the big-league level.

Hollowell will be making his Cubs and his 2024 debut if he gets into a game. He had a 6.20 ERA in 32 appearances with the Rockies in 2022 and ’23. The Cubs picked him up on waivers from the Diamondbacks last month.
