Garabito

Garabito went to Korea in June and did a nice job, finishing with a 2.64 ERA and an 84/37 K/BB in 78 1/3 innings over 15 starts, but he’s back in the U.S. now. The 30-year-old has a 5.77 ERA in two starts and 19 relief appearances as a major leaguer with the Rangers the last two seasons. While he’s solid pitching depth, he probably won’t make the Brewers out of spring training.

Garabito was cut loose earlier this week to pursue an opportunity to pitch overseas in Korea. The 29-year-old righty heads overseas after making 21 appearances over the last two seasons for the Rangers.

Garabito heads back to the minors to make room for Jack Leiter on Texas’ active roster ahead of Sunday’s game against the Giants. The 29-year-old righty has made three relief appearances this season in the big leagues.

With Kumar Rocker (shoulder) landing on the injured list on Thursday, Garabito returns to add a fresh arm to the bullpen for at least a couple of days until Jack Leiter is likely brought back to fill Rocker’s void in the Rangers’ rotation. Garabito holds a 9.00 ERA, 2.00 WHIP and an 8/1 K/BB ratio over eight innings with the big league club this season.

Garabito probably knew this was coming after he threw 51 pitches last night. He’d given up 12 runs — eight earned — in eight innings over three appearances.

Garabito was optioned to the minors last week, but apparently the Rangers have decided to reverse course. The 29-year-old righty compiled a respectable 4.78 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 22/12 K/BB ratio across 26 1/3 innings of work last year at the highest level. He’ll operate in middle relief situations for Texas.

It’s the second time Garabito has been optioned in a week. It’s possible this is it for him this year, but he’ll probably be back if some other Rangers pitcher goes on the IL.

Garabito is back a day after being sent down to Round Rock, and can do so because Jose Ureña was placed on the injured list.
