As expected, Pineda went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment last weekend following his removal from Washington’s 40-man roster. He’ll remain at Triple-A Rochester as extra organizational catching depth.

Pineda has been removed from Washington’s 40-man roster to make room for newly-signed Joey Gallo. Pineda was placed on the injured list with a finger injury in early March and dealt with an oblique injury while recovering. The 23-year-old will head to Double-A and serve as organizational depth for the Nationals.

The procedural move frees up a spot on Washington’s 40-man roster to summon reliever Rico Garcia ahead of Wednesday’s contest against the Cubs.

Pineda suffered the injury earlier this month during his minor league rehab assignment while working his way back from a right finger displacement that’s kept him out since spring training.

Pineda has gotten into a couple rehab games for High-A Wilmington since last week and is still quite far off from being an option against the Nationals. The young backstop landed on the injured list back at the end of spring training with a right finger displacement.

Pineda suffered the injury when he was hit in the hand by a pitch in early March. The 22-year-old will get a late start on the season and figures to be optioned to the minors once he’s fully-recovered.
