Faria has been cut loose to open up a roster spot at Triple-A Worcester after being sent outright to the minors last week when he was removed from Boston’s 40-man roster. The 29-year-old journeyman made one relief appearance this season for the Red Sox. He should be able to latch on somewhere else as extra organizational depth.

If he’d like, Faria can become a free agent. He gave up five runs over two innings in his lone appearance for the Red Sox.

Faria was just promoted from Triple-A Worcester on Saturday, but he’ll get the boot already with Richard Bleier returning from the injured list. He could attract some interest on waivers.

Faria had his contract selected earlier this season but never made it into a game before being designated for assignment the following day. The 29-year-old has not appeared in the majors since 2021, and he has a 6.47 ERA in 19 appearances at Triple-A Worcester.

The Red Sox needed another reliever in the bullpen after Chris Martin was placed on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation. Faria, 29, posted a 10.80 ERA, 2.00 WHIP, and 5/6 K/BB ratio across five innings for Triple-A Worcester and could be an easy cut if and when Brayan Bello makes his return this week.

Faria was one of the more intriguing pitching prospects last decade in the Rays’ system due to an excellent changeup, but hasn’t quite found the optimal role at the highest level yet. The 29-year-old former top prospect has been a bit of a journeyman, spending time with the Twins, Diamondbacks, Angels, Brewers and Rays organizations since 2019. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since making 23 appearances (three starts) for Arizona during the 2021 campaign. He’s an interesting low-risk lottery ticket for the Red Sox.

He should be able to find another opportunity rather quickly.
