Yacabonis opted to test the free agent waters rather than accept an outright minor league assignment after going unclaimed on waivers earlier this week. The 31-year-old righty has made seven relief appearances this season in the majors.

The 31-year-old right-hander had been designated for assignment over the weekend, but he passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as extra pitching depth for the Mets at Triple-A.

Yacabonis, who threw 3 1/3 frames on Friday evening on mop-up duty for New York, gets caught up in a roster crunch as the Mets needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster for Saturday’s starter Denyi Reyes.

He’ll add a fresh arm to an over-worked Mets’ bullpen as Reed Garrett and John Curtiss were optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday. Yacabonis has registered an uninspiring 9.00 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and an 8/4 K/BB ratio across nine innings with the Mets this season.

The move clears a spot for David Peterson to start against the Reds on Tuesday. Yacabonis holds a 9.00 ERA through five relief appearances with the Mets this season.

Yacabonis signed a minor league contract last December with the Mets and will get his first shot in New York after making four scoreless appearances for Triple-A Syracuse. The 31-year-old righty reliever has made 71 appearances (13 starts) in the majors dating back to 2017.

The 31-year-old had a 2.57 ERA across seven innings of Grapefruit League action but wasn’t in serious consideration to make the Mets’ bullpen. He will serve as organizational depth for the Mets, or any other team, this season.

Yacabonis was hit hard in a small sample between the Marlins and Rays this past season (13 earned runs in 14 innings), but he also missed a ton of bats with his sinker. The 30-year-old previously pitched for Buck Showalter in Baltimore and makes for an interesting project going into camp.
