Stiever

Stiever passed through waivers unclaimed and has been officially removed from Chicago’s 40-man roster. The procedural move clears up a spot for reliever Keynan Middleton to be added. The 25-year-old righty missed all of last season due to a right lat strain and will continue pitching in the minors as organizational depth.

Stiever made his Cactus League debut last week after missing all of last season due to a right lat strain. He’ll continue to function as extra starting pitching depth for the White Sox and will enter the 2023 season fully healthy.

Stiever missed the entire 2022 season due to a right lat strain and is working his way back to being an option for the White Sox. He figures to open the regular season at Triple-A Charlotte as extra starting pitching depth.

Stiever, 25, missed all of the 2022 season after suffering a strain lat. He has a chance to make starts for the White Sox in 2023, but should be off fantasy radars.

Stiever notched one strikeout and needed just 14 pitches (nine strikes) to hurl a perfect frame. The 25-year-old right-hander has been out all season recovering from last year’s right lat surgery. The encouraging update here is that he’s progressed to throwing in minor league contests and should be fully healthy entering spring training.

Stiever underwent lat surgery last August and it’s unclear when he might be fully recovered.

It was a really short stay for Stiever at the big league level, as he was recalled prior to Sunday’s game then sent back to the alternate site. His performance in Sunday’s game may have played a major role in it, as he faced four batters and allowed singles to each of them -- ultimately being charged with three earned runs.

White Sox manager Tony La Russa stated that Liam Hendriks, Aaron Bummer, and Codi Heuer will be unavailable Sunday, so the team was in need of a fresh arm. Danny Mendick was optioned in a corresponding move.

Everything noteworthy happened in the first three batters including a Dylan Moore strikeout, Kyle Lewis double, and Ty France RBI single. Stiever is being stretched out to operate as starter depth for the White Sox this season. Manager Tony La Russa sees the 23-year-old as a future rotation fixture, so there are no plans to send him to the bullpen. Stiever hd a brief, but rough 2020 season, allowing seven runs on seven hits while walking four in just 6.1 innings.

Stiever was battered by the Reds on Friday, allowing four homers and six runs in total in 2 2/3 innings of work. With Dallas Keuchel ready to return, the 23-year-old was an expendable member of the rotation anyway. We’ll probably next see him in 2021.
