Marlins acquired 1B Jonathon Long and RHP Jace Beck from the Cubs for
LHP Braxton Garrett.

Long, 24, is hitting .283/.364/.455 in his second year at Triple-A Iowa. He lacks star potential, but he could prove to be pretty solid at first base and particularly valuable while making a minimum salary the next few years. The Marlins will probably keep him in Triple-A for now, but they should give him a shot pretty soon. Kyle Stowers can move back to the outfield when that happens.

The Cubs are acquiring Braxton Garrett from the Marlins, sources tell ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The Marlins will be getting Jonathon Long and Jace Beck in return, which seems like a solid return for a pitcher they had quite obviously soured on. Long could be a factor at first base down the stretch this season.

Cubs manager Craig Counsell told reporters Jonathon Long (elbow) has progressed to swinging a bat.

Counsell added that Long is feeling better after being diagnosed with a left elbow sprain following a collision at first base last weekend. The 24-year-old slugging prospect mashed 20 homers in 607 plate appearances for Triple-A Iowa last season. The expectation is that he’ll still be medically cleared to join Team Chinese Taipei for the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

It initially appeared that Long’s injury was related to his wrist, but the Cubs have clarified the situation. The infielder is one of the better bats at the upper level in Chicago’s system, and assuming good health, he has a strong chance of making his debut in 2026.
