With Daulton Varsho (wrist) heading to the injured list on Thursday, Barrosa will return to add depth to the Astros’ outfield. The 25-year-old has hit .199/.288/.340 with two homers and 12 RBI in 169 plate appearances between the Astros and Diamondbacks on the season.

Barrosa figures to stick around with Houston for the final week of the regular season after passing through waivers unclaimed. The 25-year-old went 1-for-7 in four games after being claimed off waivers from the Diamondbacks earlier this month.

Barrosa, 25, was DFA’d by the D-backs after hitting .201/.285/.343 in 159 plate appearances this season. He’s a lifetime .280/.379/.438 hitter with 28 homers and 37 steals in 288 games in Triple-A, but considering that half of those were in Reno, it’s not a very impressive line. He’s out of options, so he’ll join the Astros’ bench. He’s probably no better than their current assortment of outfield options, though.

He hadn’t played in any of the Diamondbacks’ last six games and is hitting .201/.285/.343 with two homers and three stolen bases — an improvement on a career .180/.241/.302 MLB line in 254 plate appearances. The 25-year-old does have a strong defensive reputation and may be claimed in spite of the lack of offense.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters he wasn’t overly concerned about the severity of the injury after Carroll hyperextended his right elbow on a swing during Sunday’s comeback win over the Cardinals. The 25-year-old fantasy superstar will receive some extra time off to rest and recover with Jorge Barrosa taking over in right field. Fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now.

Barrosa’s first game after Jordan Lawlar’s injury definitely helped his case for getting regular playing time in center field for at least the next month. The homer was his second of the season and third in 211 plate appearances as a major leaguer. The 25-year-old is currently hitting .184/.257/.359 in 116 plate appearances this season.

Lawlar missed two months after suffering a fractured wrist in his sixth game of the season in April. Now he’s back on the IL after injuring his hamstring in his sixth game after returning to the lineup. Manager Torey Lovullo said there’s some hope Lawlar could beat a potential four- to six-week timeline, but it seems likely that he’s out through the break. The Diamondbacks didn’t recall Ryan Waldschmidt as Lawlar’s replacement, instead choosing Tim Tawa, so it looks like Jorge Barrosa is about to see a significant playing time increase. They can also use Tommy Troy in center, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. in left and Adrian Del Castillo at DH in search of more offense, not that Del Castillo has provided much to date.

It’s possible that due to travel Waldschmidt wasn’t going to be there in time on Friday or that the Diamondbacks didn’t want him to debut against Mets’ right-hander Nolan McLean, but either way it’s a surprise that the 23-year-old isn’t in there for his debut after being promoted from Triple-A Reno on Friday. Jorge Barrosa will start in center field and bat ninth for the Diamondbacks on Friday evening.

The early results are an .063/.118/.063 line with no extra base-hits or steals. Not ideal, but not a surprising slow start after missing seven months with a torn ACL.
