Ryan Waldschmidt is not in the Diamondbacks’ starting lineup for Friday night’s battle against the Mets.
It’s possible that due to travel Waldschmidt wasn’t going to be there in time on Friday or that the Diamondbacks didn’t want him to debut against Mets’ right-hander Nolan McLean, but either way it’s a surprise that the 23-year-old isn’t in there for his debut after being promoted from Triple-A Reno on Friday. Jorge Barrosa will start in center field and bat ninth for the Diamondbacks on Friday evening.

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is not in Arizona’s starting lineup for Thursday’s game against the White Sox.
Jorge Barrosa is playing in his stead. Gurriel Jr. had started each of the first four games since being activated from the injured list. The early results are an .063/.118/.063 line with no extra base-hits or steals. Not ideal, but not a surprising slow start after missing seven months with a torn ACL.

Jorge Barrosa hit a two-run homer in a loss Sunday to the Blue Jays.
After replacing Corbin Carroll (back), Barrosa hit his first homer of the season and second of his MLB career with a runner on. The 25-year-old hasn’t had much offensive success at the highest level, but if Carroll misses time, he may get a chance to get some run.
  • AZ Right Fielder #7
Corbin Carroll left Sunday’s game against the Blue Jays with lower back tightness.
It’s worth noting that Carroll left the game with the Diamondbacks trailing 9-1, so there’s a decent chance this is precautionary. It’s still concerning, however, and fantasy managers will likely have to await some testing before knowing Carroll’s status going forward. Jorge Barrosa took over in right and likely will play the position if Carroll needs to miss time.

Jorge Barrosa went 1-for-4 with an RBI triple as the Diamondbacks rallied to beat the Mets on Thursday evening in New York.
Barrosa capped off a four-run uprising in the seventh inning with an RBI triple off of Luke Weaver that plated Alek Thomas. The 25-year-old outfielder has struggled in his limited action at the plate this season, hitting just .217/.250/.478 with zero homers, three RBI and a 7/1 K/BB ratio in his first 25 plate appearances.
  • AZ Right Fielder #7
Corbin Carroll is not in the lineup for Thursday’s game against the Mets.
It will be Jorge Barrosa in right field and batting ninth for the Diamondbacks as they get their superstar a rest day on Thursday. Gabriel Moreno is also sitting this one out for Arizona, leaving Adrian Del Castillo and Jose Fernandez as the 4-5 hitters against Nolan McLean.
  • AZ Shortstop #10
Jordan Lawlar has a fracture in his right wrist after being hit by a pitch Thursday against the Braves and will go on the IL.
X-rays were negative last night, but a CT scan found the fracture, and he’s expected to miss 6-8 weeks. Adrian Del Castillo is set to come off the IL and replace him on the active roster. Jorge Barrosa and Tim Tawa will get some extra at-bats, and Jose Fernandez will keep playing fairly regularly for now. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. will likely beat Lawlar back from the IL, which might result in some playing time questions when Lawlar returns.
  • AZ Shortstop #11
Jose Fernandez is not in the Diamondbacks’ starting lineup for Thursday night’s showdown against the Braves.
The 22-year-old has made a major impact in his first two starts for the Diamondbacks but he’ll take a seat in this one with Carlos Santana starting at first base and Corbin Carroll functioning as the club’s designated hitter. Jorge Barrosa will draw a rare start in right field and bat ninth against Reynaldo Lopez and the Braves on Thursday evening.
  • AZ Catcher #14
Gabriel Moreno is not in the lineup for Saturday’s bout versus the Dodgers.
Moreno will take a break Saturday with James McMann getting the start behind the plate to catch Eduardo Rodriguez. Jordan Lawlar is also out of the lineup for Saturday’s contest with Jorge Barrosa starting in left.

MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert reports Diamondbacks OF Corbin Carroll suffered a broken hamate bone in batting practice on Tuesday.
We are begging good hitters to stop breaking their hamate bones. Carroll is set to undergo surgery on the hamate bone today. Gilbert says Carroll will miss “significant time” this spring. It sounds like he’s potentially in line to start the season on the injured list, and he will certainly miss the World Baseball Classic. Jorge Barrosa figures to be more involved in the early-season outfield plan if Carroll misses enough time to push his return past the start of the season. Given the D-backs’ lack of outfield depth, they team might want to consider bringing back Randal Grichuk or adding a different free agent from a group that still includes Michael Conforto, Tommy Pham, Starling Marte and Mike Tauchman.
