If Mike Hampton’s knee injury is serious, Jose Capellan will become a member of the Atlanta rotation, manager Bobby Cox said.
Regardless of role, the young flamethrower is to be picked up in all keeper leagues.

Jose Capellan was charged with six runs and seven hits in five innings for his worst outing at Triple-A Richmond yesterday.
Capellan is now 4-2 with a 2.51 ERA in seven starts at Richmond, which begins postseason play on Wednesday. He’s expected to join Atlanta this month.

Braves prospect Jose Capellan struck out 10 and walked none in six scoreless innings against Mobile on Wednesday night.
Capellan is looking like a decent bet to make it to Atlanta by the end of the season. He has 27 strikeouts and three walks in 16 1/3 innings since moving up to Double-A Greenville.

The Braves had been active in talks to acquire Kris Benson and/or Jeromy Burnitz, but those deals fell through.
At least we’re glad to learn that Atlanta refused to give up third base prospect Andy Marte to get Benson, because that looked like a slam dunk for the Pirates if they could have gotten him. Atlanta has been shopping flame thrower Jose Capellan and still could get something done today, although Burnitz reportedly said he’d retire rather than accept a trade to a team east of Denver.

Brewers recalled RHP Jose Capellan from Triple-A Nashville.
Capellan had pitched well since a shift to the bullpen in June and it’s unlikely that he’ll return to the rotation anytime soon. The Brewers are hopeful he’ll eventually develop into a closer, although they don’t need him in that role right now. If you own him in your keeper league, it’s probably a good idea to hold off on activating him as long as possible. He’s not a particularly good bet for the rest of this year.

Capellan is expected to return to the Brewers’ bullpen on August 9 when he is eligible to come off the disabled list.

Jose Capellan (shoulder) was perfect in his inning for Double-A Huntsville on Monday.
Capellan is eligible to come off the DL on Wednesday and should be activated then.

Brewers activated RHP Jose Capellan from the 15-day disabled list.
Capellan missed the minimum 15 days with a shoulder strain. He could help set up Francisco Cordero.

Jose Capellan, on the DL with a shoulder injury, is scheduled to make a rehab appearance with Double-A Huntsville on Monday.
Capellan is eligible to come off the DL on Wednesday and should do so if he throws a good inning for Huntsville.

RHP Jose Capellan, catcher Brian McCann, and pitcher Kyle Davies were all named to Baseball America’s minor league all-star team, giving the Braves more representatives than any other team.
Capellan was 14-4 with a 2.32 ERA at three levels, fanning 152 in 140 innings. McCann hit .278 for Myrtle Beach with 35 doubles, 16 homers and 66 RBI. Davies, who was named to the second team, was 13-3 with a 2.72 ERA at A, AA, and AAA, striking out 173 in 142 innings.
