White Sox released RHP Juan Carela.

The White Sox needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster on Thursday and since Carela couldn’t be designated for assignment while injured (recovering from Tommy John surgery), he had to be released. It wouldn’t be surprising in the slightest to see them bring him back on a minor league pact.

White Sox selected the contract of INF Colson Montgomery and RHP Juan Carela from Triple-A Charlotte.

Montgomery is considered not just one of the top prospects in the Chicago system, but one of the best shortstop prospects in the sport. He did struggle in 2024 however with just a .710 OPS in Triple-A, but there’s still big-time upside in his bat. Carela has a chance to make starts in 2024 after reaching Double-A and forging a 3.71 ERA over 23 starts.

White Sox acquired RHP Juan Carela from the Yankees for RHP Keynan Middleton.

If it wasn’t bolted down and was leaving at the end of the season, the White Sox tried to get it out the door on Tuesday. In return, they land a 21-year-old right-hander who has registered a 3.67 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and a 109/32 K/BB ratio across 83 1/3 innings in 17 appearances (16 starts) at High-A Hudson Valley this season.
