Mattison

The speedy Mattison has swiped 147 bases in 439 games on the farm, but he doesn’t offer much else with that bat. He projects long-term as a fifth outfielder.

Mattison was just called up from the minors on Thursday and went hitless in his lone at-bat with the big club. The speedy outfielder returns to a .250/.321/.395 batting line at the Triple-A level. The Marlins are expected to call up Bryan Peterson in a corresponding move Tuesday.

The speedy Mattison batted .260/.353/.406 with eight homers and 38 steals for Jacksonville this season. He profiles as an extra outfielder, but the Marlins like him enough to protect him from the Rule 5 draft.

Mattison hasn’t managed a hit in five at-bats this year in the major leagues. He has no fantasy value.

Mattison spent a few days with the Marlins earlier this month and saw only one at-bat. He’ll provide outfield depth while Austin Kearns nurses a strained hamstring.

Mattison was hitless in five at-bats for the Marlins this year and batted .241/.310/.394 with 13 homers and 26 steals at Triple-A. He’ll be an option for the bench in 2013.

Mattison was designated for assignment following the waiver claim of Sam Dyson, but he cleared waivers and will remain in the organization. The 27-year-old has been given an invitation to spring training.

The move makes room for the newly-claimed Sam Dyson on the 40-man roster. Mattison, 27, batted .241/.310/.394 with 13 homers and a .704 OPS in 121 games last season at the Triple-A level. He could pass through waivers unclaimed.

It’s unclear whether he’s been invited to big league camp in spring training. Mattison, 29, had an awful 2014, hitting .212/.294/.387 at Triple-A with the Brewers.
