The Rockies dropped Pellow from their 40-man roster in August, so he’s currently a minor league free agent. He’ll battle for a spot as the 25th man on some team’s roster next spring.

It might have been a good idea to carry him initially, but after he was sent down in June, Pellow shouldn’t have been brought back to the majors in early July. He did a poor job off the bench for the Rockies, and at 30 years of age, he has no future with the club.

Pellow, 31, blew his big chance by hitting .240 in 121 at-bats for the Rockies last season. He’s unlikely to win a place on Seattle’s bench.

Pellow, a third baseman throughout his career, did some catching at Colorado Springs this year. He’s hopeful the added skill will get him a job as some team’s 25th man next season.

Since he’ll be catcher-eligible right from the start of the year, Pellow would be an intriguing $1 pick if he lands a spot on the Colorado bench. He could be a backup at first, third and in left field for the Rockies.

The Rockies are expected to re-sign Pellow to a minor league deal. Because he’s catcher eligible, the 30-year-old Pellow is a sleeper. If he makes the Rockies out of spring training, he’ll be a great $1 pick.

Pellow will be catcher-eligible next season, making him a intriguing $1 pick if he lands a job as a bench player. The Rockies are likely to re-sign him and give him a chance to compete for a spot.

Pellow is 3-for-19 this season. Expect him to lose playing time to Rene Reyes if Preston Wilson can return this weekend.
