Rangers optioned RHPs Leandro Lopez and David Davalillo to Double-A Frisco; Reassigned RHPs Ryan Lobus, Eric Loomis, Patrick Murphy, and Trey Supak, LHP Robby Ahlstrom, INF Andrew Velazquez, OF Aaron Zavala, and C Cooper Johnson to minor league camp.
It’s the first large round of cuts that we have seen from the Rangers this spring but certainly won’t be the last. Nothing surprising to see here as none of the 10 players were serious candidates to crack the Opening Day roster.
  • TEX 1st Baseman
Rangers selected the contracts of 1B Abimelec Ortiz, RHP David Davalillo and RHP Leandro Lopez from Triple-A Round Rock.
Ortiz earns a spot on Texas’ 40-man roster and will be protected from next month’s Rule 5 Draft after recording an .835 OPS with 25 home runs and four steals in 130 games between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock this past season. He offers enough over-the-fence power potential to be interesting if it comes together at the highest level.
  • TEX Starting Pitcher
Rangers prospects Leandro Lopez and Josh Stephan combined to pitch seven hitless innings and strike out 12 for Surprise of the AFL on Friday.
Lopez struck out seven over three innings, and he now has a 4.73 ERA and 17 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings this fall. That’s pretty good for any AFL pitcher, but especially for someone like Lopez, who missed most of the season with arm problems and hasn’t pitched above A ball yet.
