Miranda hit .304/.373/.522 this spring, but his fate was sealed when the Padres committed to Ty France as a bench guy. Sears probably would have had a rotation spot with a strong spring, but he turned in an 8.44 ERA in his three starts. If the Padres had it to do over again, they probably would have non-tendered him in November instead of retaining him for $2.75 million.

Gillaspie was actually supposed to start the Padres’ spring opener last Friday, but he left the team after his wife went into labor. The 28-year-old is competing for a bullpen spot after posting a 5.40 ERA in 18 1/3 innings for the Padres over the last two seasons.

The Padres decided against making room in their pen for Gillaspie after his 2 1/2-month absence due to a strained oblique, and since he’s out of options, he’ll be traded or go on waivers. Gillaspie had a 2.57 ERA in seven innings before getting hurt in April. He has a career 4.63 ERA in 44 2/3 major league innings.

Gillaspie heads to the injured list after just three relief appearances this season for San Diego. He’ll likely require a multi-week absence.

Gillaspie, who had a 7.15 ERA in 11 1/3 innings for the Padres last season, is coming up as bullpen depth. Omar Cruz was optioned to Triple-A to make room on the active roster and Tom Cosgrove was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.

Gillaspie was non-tendered last month by the Padres, but winds up returning as extra organizational relief depth. The 27-year-old righty made nine relief appearances last year for San Diego, posting an inflated 7.15 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 7/2 K/BB ratio across 11 1/3 innings.

All of these were easy cuts. Patiño, the former top prospect whom the Padres got back from the White Sox off waivers last winter, underwent Tommy John surgery in May. He’ll almost surely be offered a minor league contract to stick around.

Gillaspie is a frequent flier between El Paso and San Diego, and he’ll make his way east this time. Lake Bachar was recalled to take Gillaspie’s place on the roster.

Gillaspie provides San Diego with some extra bullpen depth heading into Thursday’s series opener against the Mets. The 27-year-old righty has posted a serviceable 3.24 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 5/0 K/BB ratio across 8 1/3 innings (seven appearances) this season for the Padres.

The 27-year-old hurler is being sent out to help make room for the additions of Tanner Scott, Bryan Hoeing and Martin Perez to the active roster on Wednesday. Gillaspie has impressed in his limited action with the Padres this season, posting a 3.24 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and a 5/0 K/BB ratio over 8 1/3 innings. He should get another opportunity with the Padres before the season is through.
