Porter slashed .212/.346/.316 with Triple-A Sacramento and played five games with the Giants after every catcher on the roster went down with an injury. The 30-year-old will have a hard time earning a roster spot to begin 2026.

Porter returns as organizational catching depth for San Francisco after passing through waivers unclaimed and electing free agency. The 29-year-old backstop got into four games earlier this season for the Giants.

The Giants needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster for Sergio Alcántara on Thursday and unfortunately Porter was the odd man out this time around. It seems likely that the 29-year-old backstop will pass through waivers unclaimed and continue to function as extra depth for the Giants at the Triple-A level.

Porter heads back to the minors with starting catcher Patrick Bailey back from the injured list for Wednesday’s game against the Guardians. The 29-year-old backstop was only up for a handful of games as emergency depth.

Porter got into 11 games for the Royals back in 2023, which is the last time he appeared in the majors. The 29-year-old backstop provides San Francisco with some extra catching depth while starter Patrick Bailey is on the shelf with a neck strain.

No real surprises here. Beck has a chance to make starts for the Giants in 2025, but was never going to make the Opening Day rotation. Meckler will likely be a bench option at some point this summer for San Francisco.

Porter, 29, was outrighted off the 40-man roster by the Mets in August, and elected minor-league free agency after the season. The 29-year-old has bounced around organizations, and he’ll likely provide depth for the Giants in 2025 with an outside chance he earns the backup backstop job.

Porter was brought in as minor league catching depth by the Mets in July and was booted off the 40-man roster after the trade deadline. He never appeared in a major league game for New York and will continue to serve as catching depth in the minors.

The deal, which was first reported last Thursday, is now official. Porter joins Triple-A Rochester as a potential backup catching option behind young stalwart Francisco Alvarez. He’s not going to make an impact for fantasy purposes, but he’s a reliable depth option for the Mets moving forward.
